Early Learning Coalition of Escambia County
The Early Learning Coalition of Escambia County recently delivered a workshop to all lead VPK teachers targeting the behavior and learning styles of boys. Based on research from the Gurian Institute in Colorado Springs, CO, the four-hour workshop uses the latest brain research to explore how boys are wired and how classroom teachers can adjust their practices and environments to help boys learn.
Two hours of the workshop are lecture and group activities. The final two hours include a make and take of literacy materials to enhance and foster emerging literacy skills in every child in the classroom. Responses from the workshops have been overwhelming; strategies learned in class can be implemented the day after training and they work. For more information, email Vicki Pugh, Professional Development Coordinator of the Coalition, at vpugh@elcescambia.org.

The Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend supports families as they help their child develop early literacy skills by providing them with quality children's books and family literacy education. Through the My First Books program, a new children's book is given to families who visit one of the Coalition's seven Family Service Centers.
During that visit, Coalition staff members help parents identify various ways to support their children's literacy development. In addition, the Coalition collects quality used children's books from the community and gives families "Book Coupons" that can be exchanged for a gently used children's book throughout the year.
Thanks to the generous community support for My First Books, there was a ribbon cutting ceremony on February 12 for the Grand Opening of the first Word Garden Children's Library, located in one of the Coalition's Family Services Centers. The ceremony was hosted by Chris L. Jensen, Jr., chairman of the Coalition, and My First Books spokesperson, former state representative Loranne Ausley.

Early Learning Coalition of Broward County
Along with several early care and education professionals, the Early Learning Coalition of Broward County, Inc., recently explored the contributions that child care providers give to families to help children stay in care. The group elected to distribute a pilot survey to gauge the amount of contributions, or, as it is newly defined, the scholarships that are being given to families.
For the purposes of this survey, scholarships were defined as when a provider waives a co-payment or makes adjustments to the cost of care for families.
Overall, the findings showcased that early care and education providers are not just educational but also financial partners in Broward County's early care and education system. The information gathered will be used to a create a county-wide marketing program that will assist early care and education providers in engaging in further advocacy, as well as encouraging the business community to support the early care and education programs in their communities.

Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County
On April 4, thousands gathered in Al Lopez Park in Tampa to celebrate the 2009 Hillsborough Week of the Young Child Family Fun Day Celebration. The Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County, along with many other organizations, sponsored the event that brings the citizens of Hillsborough County together to celebrate young children and recognize the contributions and importance of early childhood professionals.
An estimated 3,000 people attended the free, four-hour event which featured over 60 child care providers who all conducted an interactive learning activity for children aged birth to 10 years of age. Instead of having a booth fee and having rides and fair type games, the Week of the Young Child Family Fun Day planning committee asked participating providers to conduct an activity for the children that touched upon at least one of the learning domains. This gives the Coalition's providers an opportunity to demonstrate what they do in their classrooms; the kids loved it and the parents were engaged. The event also featured a live stage show with area child performers and family-oriented musical and performing acts such as the Radio Disney "Edutainment" Crew. In the crowd, attendees enjoyed clowns, roaming jugglers and life-size characters like Spiderman and PBS's 'Super Why'.
